This collection consists predominantly of letters from James Carlton Owens to his parents, wife, and children written during his Naval service in World War II. Also included are a letter from Rosa Lee Owens to James C. Owens, telegrams to the family from the military confirming the death of Owens, sympathy letters, military memorabilia, medals (including the Purple Heart), books, and certificates.

There is a map, prayer book, pay record book and a military guide book in the collections. Researchers may find the guide book to San Antonio particularly interesting because it includes descriptions of Fort Sam Houston, Leon Springs Military Reservation, Camp Stanley, Kelly Field, the Balloon School, Camp Travis, Army YMCA, Camp Logan, and Camp McArthur.

The collection consists of research notes, unpublished manuscripts and a large collection of the newspaper articles Block wrote for the 'Beaumont Enterprise between 1998 and 2004. The collection also has the manuscript pages by chapter for 'Mill Towns and Ghost Towns of East Texas', which contains information about mill towns, sawmills, tram roads, and logging camps relating to East Texas lumbering towns.
