Journal of Mrs. Frost Thorn (typescript, 49 pages), 1835-1836
Scope and Contents
The collection contains the journal of Susan Wroe Edwards Thorn. The Journal commences on Nov. 8, 1835. It begins with references to the preparations for the Texas Revolution, describing soldiers, weather, the Siege of Bexar, and rumors of Native American uprisings. The journal breaks off between January 1, and June 6, 1836, skipping the bulk of the fighting in the revolution. The journal from that point focuses on the Thorn’s trip to New York. Descriptions of the trip include social comments about fellow travelers and resort spas along the route. Mrs. Thorn includes her philosophical thoughts on religion and literature. She also describes the topography of the land as they pass through Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky. She reports news from Texas as she hears it, but it is only intermittently. She describes making most of the journey via steamship up the Mississippi, and the rest by stagecoach. The farthest point mentioned is Clifton Forge, Virginia.
