Scope and Contents

This collection consists predominantly of research (articles, emails, memos, notes, pamphlets, reports) about legislative issues. The collection includes drafts and final copies of many bills that Representative Christian authored. The casework and correspondence demonstrate the wide range of issues that a state legislator handles for their constituents.

Biographical / Historical

Wayne Christian (9/26/1950- ) served as the District 9 Texas State Representative for seven sessions (1997-2005, 2007-2012) of the Texas Legislature. A Republican representing Jasper, Nacogdoches, Sabine, San Augustine, and Shelby Counties, Christian was consistently one of the state’s most conservative legislators during his tenure and a frequent advocate for family and faith-based legislation. Christian served on two committees each legislative session and was vice-chair of three committees: Financial Institutions (2003), Regulated Industries (2007) and Criminal Jurisprudence.

Wayne Christian is a lifelong Texan. Born in Center, he grew up in Tenaha. In 1969 he was the valedictorian of Tenaha High School. Christian attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches and graduate in 1973 with a bachelor’s of business administration and minor in marketing. In the 1970s and early 80s, Christian was lead singer of the country/gospel band the Mercy River Boys. The band toured nationally and was nominated for a Grammy award in 1979. Christian and his wife Lisa (m.1975) have three children.

Christian owns and manages Wayne Christian Financial Services in Center, est.1987.
