Abstract

This collection consists predominantly of letters from James Carlton Owens to his parents, wife, and children written during his Naval service in World War II. Also included are a letter from Rosa Lee Owens to James C. Owens, telegrams to the family from the military confirming the death of Owens, sympathy letters, military memorabilia, medals (including the Purple Heart), books, and certificates.

Scope and Contents A pair of scrapbooks, family photographs, genealogy materials, and a bomber jacket makes up the majority of this small collection. The scrapbooks have photographs, newspaper clippings, telegrams, and letters about Ross Fountain and other Nacogdoches men serving in World War 2. Abstract

The newsletters contain items of interest to the Navy troops, news about the war abroad, and events in the Pacific. The third issue is dated two days after the United States dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, August 14, 1945. Of particular interest are the columns entitled “Hirihito’s Last Imperial Words,” “Dramatic News Comes After Three Days of Tense Waiting” and “War Timetable.”
