Biographical or Historical Information

The Nacogdoches County Chapter of the American Red Cross was formed sometime prior to 1930 and was reorganized in 1931, when these records begin. In addition to routine correspondence, the correspondence files contain materials relating to disasters, minutes of meetings, chapter financial reports, roll call (annual membership drive), and the war relief effort. Some of the programs undertaken by the Chapter included the hiring of a public health nurse, the distribution of sacks of flour provided by the national organization, the distribution of cloth and garments, conducting of life-saving classes in swimming, and relief for victims of a tornado at Etoile and a hurricane on the Texas coast. When the Chapter used money collected in fund campaigns, a disbursement record or order was created.
