Biographical or Historical Information

Mildred Vivian Wyatt was born October 27, 1900 to John Spencer and Ellen Elizabeth (Rogers) Wyatt. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1922 and a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University in 1936.

Mildred Wyatt’s library career at Stephen F. Austin State University spanned four decades (1930-1971). She served as library director from 1938-1966 during a period of sweeping change and growth. She directed the expansion of programs and services from the library’s infancy in a room in the Rusk Building, through the lean years of World War II, into the modern era of open stacks and burgeoning technology. Mildred Wyatt’s professional contributions included service as president of the Texas Library Association and as a member of the council and executive board of the American Library Association.

She is remembered as a person of keen intellect and wit, whose perseverance and goodwill saw the library staff through many difficult times. The Wyatt Room in the Ralph W. Steen Library was named in her memory by the University’s Board of Regents in 1990. Mildred Wyatt died October 16, 1987.
