The Brightwell family consisted of three notable members who settled in Rusk County, Texas, and were avid farmers from the 1890s to 1940s. Charles Wilson Brightwell (1844-1913) was originally from DeKalb and Fulton, Georgia, where his family farmed nearby land until he moved with his wife, Margaret Caroline Ball, to Texas around the late 1880s. Together, the couple had six children, including William Peter Brightwell (1867-1930). The family was involved in the Yellow Primitive Baptist Association, and Charles Wilson Brightwell was a member of the Texas Farmers Association in the 1890s. His son, William, continued the family’s tradition of farming in which he planted and sold cotton seeds bought from Longview and Overton, Texas. William married Carrie Arah Adner Drummond (1870-1923), and together they had eleven children. Their son Walter Jesse Brightwell (1891-1976) presided over the next generation of farming and took up residence in Henderson, Texas.

Walter Jessie Brightwell married Beatrice Irene Nixon Brightwell (1894-1952), and they had a large family of fourteen children. Their son Charles Oren Brightwell was born on April 8, 1935 in Henderson, Texas. After graduating from high school Charles joined the United States Army and attended Stephen F. Austin State University.
