Scope and Contents

The collection includes personal and business letters, accounts, agreements, receipts and other business and legal papers of the Lister family of Tennessee and Shelby Co., Texas (1834-1867); personal letters of the Jordan Williams family of Selma and Alpine, Alabama (1857-1862) chiefly to Rosalindy Lister; and field notes, plats, deeds, bonds, court orders, accounts, receipts, land documents and letters of James R. Arnold, William W. Garret, and James S. Linn of Nacogdoches Co., Texas (1854-1900).

Some researchers may also be interested in the World War 1 liberty bond and loan posters in the collection.

Biographical or Historical Information

Born January 20, 1930, and a native of the Fairview Community near Nacogdoches, Mr. Crossland was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and a member of the Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees. He was intensely interested in local history and belonged to the Nacogdoches Historical Society. Mr. Crossland collected these papers and documents pertaining chiefly to early Nacogdoches history which, after his untimely death in November, 1959, were placed in the library by his widow.

Arrangement

The bulk of this collection is described in 109 folders and was originally housed in five clamshell boxes. Boxes 1-5 were consolidated into a single banker's box. The original folder number for boxes 1-5 remains in place. There is also one oversize bundle with seven items.
