Biographical / Historical
Ben Ramsey (1903-1985) was a Texas state legislator, secretary of state, lieutenant governor, and railroad commissioner from San Augustine, Texas. He was essential in securing Texas state control of offshore oil drilling and development of the petroleum industry in the state.
Lyne Taliaferro Barret (1832–1913) was a pioneer oilman in Texas. From San Augustine County, his early speculation in Texas’s oil fields produced the first oil producing well in the state in 1866.
