Scope and Contents

The collection consists of various documents related to the affairs of the Blount family of San Augustine County, Texas, from 1836-1928. Most of the documents are land grants or deeds in San Augustine County, usually with a member of the Blount family as either grantor or grantee. There are also deeds or grants for land in Shelby, Sabine, Bexar, Henderson, Nacogdoches, and Tarrant counties. There are also legal documents from dealings in other states, including Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. There are also survey maps and legal case documents related to the land in the deeds/grants. These legal documents span from 1836 to 1928, with the majority being in the nineteenth century. Also included are a few photographs and newspaper clippings from the early 20th century. The collection will be useful for researchers interested in families with a long line in East Texas, and San Augustine especially, as well as land dealings in the same, and early connections between Texas and other parts of the American South.

Biographical / Historical

Stephen W. Blount (1808-1890) was a soldier, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence as a representative of San Augustine County, and later served as County Clerk and Postmaster of that county. He was born in Burke County, Georgia, and served in the militia and as sheriff there as a young man. He came to Texas in 1835 and took part in the Texas Revolution. He was a large landowner and cotton planter after Texas gained its independence. He was active in Democratic Party politics both before and after the Civil War, and acted as Fiscal Agent for the Confederate States during the war.

His son, also Stephen W. Blount (1853-1928) was a judge, lawyer, and state legislator who lived in Nacogdoches who was also active in Democratic Party politics in the state.

Abstract

The collection consists of various documents related to the affairs of the Stephen W. Blount (1808-1890) family of San Augustine County, Texas, from 1836-1928. Most of the documents are land grants or deeds in San Augustine County.

Arrangement

The bulk of this collection consists of 145 items described in 16 folders and housed two clamshell boxes. There are also 29 items in one oversize bundle.
