The letters in this collection document A. A. Nelson II and Mattie Langston’s courtship and early marriage between 1895 to 1899 and provide a perspective of life in Nacogdoches in the late 19th century.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Albert Aldrich Nelson II (named after his grandfather A.A. Nelson, 1814-1892) was born on January 31st, 1875 to John Brooks Nelson and Sarah Moore Nelson. Nelson attended medical school in 1894 in Galveston, transferred to a medical college in St. Louis, and graduated in April 1897. He became a Nacogdoches board-certified physician on May 28th 1898. Nelson married Mattie L. Langston on January 30th, 1898 and they had four children together. Following his marriage, Nelson started a medical practice in Nacogdoches at his residence in 1899. Nelson died on December 28th, 1934 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
