Gayla Johnson Mize Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains newspaper clippings, letters and other correspondence, business proposals, committee meeting minutes, brochures, maps, and photographs. Also included in the collection are a historic Bible from 1947, a community service award, an unused baby book, and photographs of former sheriff A.J. Spradley.

Biographical or Historical Information
Gayla Johnson was born February 13, 1941 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She graduated from Nacogdoches High School and then Massey Business College. On August 18, 1973 she married Ray Mize. In 2000 she received an Outstanding Community Service Award from the American Association of University Women. Gayla Mize was responsible for the dedication and beatification of the Nacogdoches Plaza Principal on the Downton Square. She was an active member in several clubs including the Flora Gardens Club and Historic Nacogdoches, Inc. Gayla and Ray had two children, Lisa and Jimmy. Gayla passed away February 24, 2009.
