Biographical / Historical

Noted local architect Diedrich Rulfs (1848-1926), the family patriarch, came to Nacogdoches, Texas from Germany in 1880. He and his wife, Johanna Amelia Boschen Rulfs (1849-1918), had one son, Dr. Carl Henry Rulfs (b. Germany 1878-1954). In 1907 Carl married Anna Taylor (1879-1961) also from Nacogdoches. Anna’s parents were Lawrence Stern Taylor (1842-1925) and Harriet Durst Irion Taylor (1844-1914). Anna’s siblings included a sister, Laura Taylor (1882-1944). After working as a doctor for various timber companies, Carl and Anna moved to San Augustine where Dr. Rulfs continued his medical practice and they raised the four of their children who lived to adulthood: Lawrence Dietrich Rulfs (1912-1965), Dietrich Anton Gahrad William Edward Rulfs (1913-1988), Anna Kathryn Rulfs (1917-2009), and Milam Irion Rulfs (1922-1943). Dietrich A. G. W. E. Rulfs served in the Army during World War II (12 May 1942-5 February 1946) and corresponded with his aunt, Laura Taylor. U. S. Marine Corps Private First Class Milam I. Rulfs aka “Jay Bird” died in World War Two while serving in the Pacific and is listed as Missing in Action in Bougainville, Papua, New Guinea. Anna Kathryn married Richard Holbrook (1918-1959) who served in World War II with the Texas Tec4 1927 engineer AVN Company. After Richard Holbrook’s death, Anna Kathryn moved to Nacogdoches where she became the Rulfs, Taylor, Durst, and extended families’ genealogist.

This collection consists of 123 items described in ten folders and housed in one clamshell box.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Personal papers and photographs were originally the property of Anna Kathryn Holbrook of Nacogdoches, Texas and subsequently sold as part of an estate auction. The items were acquired by multiple individuals and eventually given to the East Texas Research Center at Stephen F. Austin State University. There is no known original order to this collection.
