The College of Sciences and Mathematics oversees a number of different departments dealing with science, math, statistics, nursing and pre-health professional studies. As of 2011 the College is the home of the Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Geology, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the Richard and Lucille Dewitt School of Nursing. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a variety of degrees, including Bachelors in Mathematics or Mathematics with Teach Certification, minors in Mathematics or Statistics, and Master’s degrees in Mathematics, Statistics, or School Mathematics Teaching. The Department of Biology offers students at SFA a number of classes and majors if the field. Students can take classes in general biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, organismal biology, cell and molecular biology, and pre-health professional field. Students can receive a Bachelors Degree in Biology and there are degree tracks in Botany, Cellular and Molecular Biology, and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The Department of Chemistry has two types of degrees, Bachelors in Biochemistry which specializes in pre-professional fields and Bachelors in Chemistry which covers many different degree tracks. There is also a graduate degree in chemistry and a minor is also offered. The Department of Computer Science was formed in October on 1970 with classes starting during the Fall 1971 semester offering a Bachelor of Science degree as part of the College of Business. The Department of Geology gives students an understanding of the methods of science and the fundamentals of earth science as they relate to the physical environment and our dependence on earth resources, such as minerals, rocks, fuels, ores and water. The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a Bachelors in Physics along with minors in physics, astronomy, and engineering. The department also offers a graduate degree along with pre-engineering and dual degrees. The department also operated a planetarium, an observatory, and a weather station. The 1985-1986 academic year appears to be the first in which the Department of Physics and Astronomy existed at SFA. Prior to this, the Physics Department was its own entity with limited courses in astronomy. Physics 301, Descriptive Astronomy, was first offered in the 1968-1969 academic year, within the Department of Physics and was reportedly well received in the department's annual report. The School of Nursing was added to the curriculum at SFA in 1977. The first students admitted to the program were registered nurses with associate degrees who were seeking a bachelors degree. It was not until fall of 1981 when students were allowed to enter the program that had no background in the nursing. In 2007 the Texas legislature passed a bill to authorize a new nursing school for SFA. The $13 million facility was built on 17 acres of land donated by Lucille and Richard, her late husband, DeWitt. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in January 2009 and opened in the spring of 2010.
