Content Description

The Gerron S. Hite Collection provides researchers with three boxes and one oversized container with material pertaining to cemeteries, mostly in Texas. Box one contains a collection of cemetery related material requests, monument bill of sale, headstone contracts, documents, field notes, and deeds from various Texas cemeteries dated 1893 to 1929. This material would be useful for researchers interested in the contracts and processes of internment in the late 18th to early 19th century. Box one also includes various cemetery photographs and cemetery post cards. Box 2 and Box 3 contain various publications, reports, field guides, and printed material pertaining to cemetery and gravestone preservation efforts and best practices. The oversized container features the 1990 San Antonio Cemeteries Historic District Master Plan, newspaper clippings about various historic cemeteries in Texas, a map of Hebrew Cemetery in Ennis, and Odd Fellows in memoriam flag.

Biographical / Historical

Gerron S. Hite is an architectural preservationist who earned a Bachelor of Architecture from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California and a graduate degree in Architectural Preservation from Columbia University. He moved to Austin in 1983 where he began work at the Texas Historical Commission reviewing historic courthouse designations and preservation tax credits. Throughout his career, he always maintained a passion for cemetery preservation and in the mid 1970s started collecting cemetery related materials. Hite helped create the THC’s historic cemetery preservation program by conducting statewide surveys, designation programs, and public initiatives. In 2009, he retired in San Angelo, where he continued preservation work serving on local boards. In 2013, he authored Images of America: San Angelo 1950s and Beyond by Arcadia Publishing.
