Scope and Contents

The Rowlett Store Ledger contains customer account records from 1869 to 1873. The handwriting is very difficult to decipher in places, but some of the names mentioned in the ledger include B. A. Rowlett, W. E. Rowlett, James Swain, Sam Davis, Alford Arnold, Peter Lockett, Sam Atkinson, Nathan Hearns, Jesse Morse, J. G. Steele, Lemuel Campbell, and Gabe and Aaron Collins. Recipes and drafts or copies of letters are recorded on some pages of the ledger. The ledger also contains family records of the family of William Albert McLain dating from 1881, the family of Madison Franklin Whitaker from 1841, and the family of Richard Carlisle Wright from 1925

Biographical or Historical Information

Albert Houston Rowlett, his wife Mary Elizabeth Stein/Stone, and daughter Mary Ann Rowlett, came to Texas from Mississippi by way of Natchitoches, Louisiana. The Rowlett's home was west of Nacogdoches on the San Antonio Road, where they operated a mercantile store. James Grief McLain married Mary Ann Rowlett on January 15, 1879. They were the parents of one son, William Albert McLain, born January 15, 1881. Mary Ann Rowlett McLain died two weeks after the birth of her son. William Albert McLain married Susan Lovella Whitaker, daughter of Madison Franklin Whitaker, on December 24, 1903. Their youngest child Gayla McLain was born June 1, 1926. She married Richard Carlisle Wright on June 1, 1947. They were the parents of three children.
