John August Tubbe Sr. known as August, was born Prussia on February 17, 1841. He was the son of Karl L. and Justina Tubbe. His mom Justina and two children arrived in New Orleans in 1855 and then made their way to Nacogdoches in 1856. February 12, 1862 August married Mary/Marie Gertrude Kolb. Later that year he joined the Texas Volunteers of the Confederate Army. August was a pastor for several churches, a member of the Nacogdoches Milam Lodge, a farmer on 160 acre tract, and a sawmill operator. August had legal issues later in life. He never became a naturalized citizen and was arrested and jailed in Tyler, Texas. He died a year later in 1918.
