Biographical / Historical

Mr. Jewel Huntington Helpinstill was born in Anderson County, Texas in 1891, but his family lived in Cushing, Nacogdoches County. He served in Company D, 9th Infantry, during World War I (1918). After the war, Helpinstill managed the Magnolia Service Station in Nacogdoches. By 1929, he provided automobile supplies and parts to residents of the city and surrounding area. On December 20, 1929, Helpinstill married Mina Elizabeth Seelbach of Nacogdoches. Miss Seelbach was an instructor at the Teacher’s College of Denton, Texas at that time. She held a B.S. and a M.A. in Geography. The newly- wed couple returned to Nacogdoches and established the Helpinstill Sales Company on West Main Street. The business moved to 111-112 North Street and was renamed as Helpinstill Auto Supply where the store remained in operation until March 1973.

Mr. Helpinstill was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1941 from the ninth district (Nacogdoches) and served until 1949. He worked on thirteen different committees during his tenure as a legislator. Mrs. Mina Helpinstill was a charter member of the East Texas Historical Association (1962) and a member of the local Daughters of the American Revolution.
