Biographical / Historical

David Lot “D.L.” Hancock was born on September 25, 1900, in Garrison, Texas, to James Samuel Benjamin Hancock and Mary Caroline Evans. On December 30, 1919, he married Rosa Belle Peterson, who was born on June 25, 1901, to Thomas Jefferson Peterson and Alice Elizabeth Crawford. D.L. and Rose attended the Center School in Garrison, Texas, from 1907, becoming childhood sweethearts. The two frequently wrote letters over the course of 1918 and 1919. After the two were wed, they took residence near Naconiche Creek, where they farmed their land. D.L. and Rosa Belle Hancock had four children: John D. (1921), Mary Elizabeth (1922), Virginia Belle (1926), and Betty Lou (1936).

In the 1930s and 1940s, D.L. and Rosa Belle continued to work on their farm and raised mules, swine, and tended to cops. D.L. also worked on pipelines, timber, and drove the school bus in Garrison, Texas. In addition, D.L. worked as an orderly in a Nacogdoches retirement home.
