Scope and Contents

The records in this collection are from the Nacogdoches County civil court and criminal courts. Civil court records include civil cases, tax inventories, lists of taxable property, bonds, Board of Land Commissioner oaths and other records, survey files, receipts for field notes, writs of habeas corpus, land records, naturalization papers, inquest records, estray papers, and audited accounts. There are also personal and business records for A. A. Nelson. Criminal court records are court casess as well as several folders of subpoena records.

Biographical or Historical Information

In March 1932 The County Clerk of Nacogdoches placed in the Library approximately sixteen boxes full of folded documents and several volumes of county records. Although the documents were transferred to more suitable acid free boxes, the arrangement in which the documents were received in the Library are essentially unchanged.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Stone Fort Chapter, gifted two rolls of microfilm that were added to the collection February 18, 1969.

Arrangement

This collection is described in 513 folders and was originally housed in 45 clamshell boxes. These were consolidated into six banker's boxes. The original folder numbering for boxes 1-45 remains in place. The collection is variably organized at the folder and item levels. There is also one oversize bundle with two items and two rolls of microfilm in the collection.

Series 1 (Criminal Court records) is described in 146 folders and is housed in Boxes 1-13 and Boxes 44-45.

Series 2 (Civil Court records) is described in 367 folders and is housed in Boxes 14-43, as well as Bundle 1.
