Nettie E. Marshall Collection
Scope and Contents
The Nettie E. Marshall Collections offer insight into the personal life of retired school teacher Nettie E. Marshall shortly after the death of her husband Frank P. Marshall. The collection features a photograph of Nettie E. Marshall and a Texas Teacher’s Daily Register from Mrs. Marshall’s classroom from the academic year 1918-1919 where she took role daily. The collection also features a photograph of Nettie E. Marshall and husband Frank P. Marshall alongside his obituary publicizing his death on November 1, 1949. The collection features a personal letter written by Nettie E. Marshall to niece Nan A. Christopher dated January 17, 1950. The letter primarily discusses her continued bereavement over husband Frank P. Marshall’s recent death but also discusses family, weather, nearby construction, and the rising cost of bills. Biographical / Historical
Jenette E. “Nettie” Hill Marshall was born on February 13, 1870 to parents John Walker Hill and Rachel Adeline Legg Hill in Appleby, Texas. Nettie married Frank Marshall on December 28, 1884. The couple attended Sam Houston Normal School (now Sam Houston State University) together. From 1902 to 1920 she taught at the Central Grammar School in Nacogdoches, Texas. She eventually opened a primary school, kindergarten through third grade, in her home where she taught until her retirement in 1934. In August of 1953, Nacogdoches’s West End School was renamed in her honor to be Nettie Marshall Elementary School. Nettie died from arteriosclerosis on November 29, 1953 in Nacogdoches, Texas and was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Frances P. “Frank” Marshall was born on December 20, 1864 to parents John Alford Marshall and Mary Louisa Phillips Marshall in Selma, Alabama and moved to Panola County, Texas as a child. He taught school in Nacogdoches alongside his wife Nettie Marshall for 25 years. In 1906 he began a law firm in Nacogdoches where he worked until his retirement in 1939. During
his career he also served as Nacogdoches County judge for eight years and district attorney. Frank was a member of the York Rite of Texas Masonic Lodge serving in position of leadership in the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas. Frank died of a heart attack on November 1, 1949 in Nacogdoches, Texas and was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Nan Avalyn Meador Christopher was born on April 20, 1909 to parents Rebb Lee Meador and Addie Sallie Hill Meador in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was married to a farmer named John Emmett Christopher on December 23, 1933 and the couple had one daughter named Emily Jane Christopher who was born June 4, 1945. Like her Aunt Nettie, Nan was a beloved teacher in East Texas. Nan died June 1, 1987 in Lufkin, Texas and was buried at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas.
